No two projects are exactly the same. Accordingly, our rates for translation and localization are determined by the following factors:

  • Word Count

  • Degree of Technical Difficulty

  • Deadline

Word Count

Translation software utilities are used to determine the word count of a file, and a manual appraisal is also made to ensure an accurate count. Word count is based on the source language, and clients can estimate the number of words in a document by using the "word count" tool in a word processing program such as MS Word. An average Japanese document contains around 400 characters or 200 words per page and an English document contains about 350 words per page.

Degree of Technical Difficulty

Is it a straight translation or a localization project? Is it highly technical? We translate technical as well as general material, and our rates vary depending on the technical difficulty of the material to be translated. Highly technical documents require specialists who are knowledgeable in the terminology of their respective fields and will be charged at a higher rate than documents (such as business memos) that are written in simpler language. Likewise, advertising copy oftentimes requires a bit of reading between the lines and not only involves the translation of the words themselves but the style and overall mood of the copy.

Deadline

Do you have a rush project? Does it require overtime and/or weekend work? If a client needs a project done much sooner than our estimated turn-around time and requires us to pull resources from other projects, a higher rate may be assessed.

Before any translation job starts, we provide a free quotation, estimating the cost and turn-around time for the project. A translation project will never begin without PDI first receiving the express written consent of the client. The figure quoted will never be changed at a later date, even if the project requires more work than originally estimated. As always, client confidentiality is a top priority.

For an obligation-free translation cost estimate, please email us at info@pacificdreams.org or call (503) 783-1390.
